In keeping with the University’s liberal arts tradition, SXU Gallery viewers are offered a wide spectrum of artistic expression as well as a variety of media. Primarily drawing on the richness of vision that Chicago and Midwest artists provide in abundance, these exhibits provide our surrounding community with a sophisticated caliber of visual expression, as well as providing inspiring stimuli to our students. As one of the few professional galleries on the southwest side of Chicago, we serve as a vital link in the chain of quality, local visual arts programming.
The SXU Gallery is an important adjunct to the Art & Design programs. The work of professional artists, on display during a monthly basis, brings additional visual material for student-faculty study. Shows are normally accompanied by an opening lecture by the artist. Senior Art students present their work in an exhibit in the SXU Gallery as a capstone to their experience in the Art & Design Department. Gallery related work to strengthen preparation for art-related careers include exhibition installation experience, gallery print design and publicity.
