Clinton, Iowa – Senior guard Larry Pikes (Richton Park, Ill./Alaska-Anchorage/Blackhawk-East/Rich South) shot an impressive 6-for-8 from the field and scored a team-best 18 points to lead the Saint Xavier University men’s basketball team to a 78-67 victory over Ashford University (Iowa) Friday evening at Kehl Arena in Clinton, Iowa. As a team, the Cougars (2-0 overall) shot 50 percent (28-for-56) on the night, including 52 percent (16-for-31) in first-half action. In addition, senior guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) posted a double-double Friday with 14 points and 10 rebounds for SXU.

The Cougars got off to a slow start falling behind 11-4 in the game’s first five minutes. However, a 15-2 scoring run sparked by six straight points from Pikes gave Saint Xavier a 19-13 lead with 11 minutes to play in the first half. Leading by as many as 11 points in first-half action, SXU took a five-point lead, 39-34, into the halftime break. The Saints would tie the game, 39-39, early in the second half, but Scott would help lead a 9-0 run allowing the Cougars to pull away for good. Senior guard Daniel Joiner led all scorers with 25 points for Ashford University.

Saint Xavier (2-0 overall/1-0 CCAC) takes on Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) on Tuesday, November 10, in non-conference action in Whiting, Ind. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
