Mullaney Leads SXU Volleyball Over Cardinal Stritch in Four

CHICAGO – Led by 16 kills and 14 digs from freshman outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team held on to capture a key Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory in four sets (25-18, 29-27, 24-26 and 25-18) over Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) on “Senior and Parent’s Night” Tuesday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The win gives the Cougars a fourth-place finish in the final conference regular-season standings (6-4) and the No. 4 seed in this weekend’s conference tournament. In addition to Mullaney, freshman outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) also had a monster night for SXU recording 12 kills, 19 digs and six service aces.
Sophomore setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) got the offense in sync for the Cougars finishing with a match-best 44 assists in addition to her 17 digs. Senior right side Stephanie Galas (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) had six kills, but was forced to leave the court in the second set due to injury. Senior defensive specialist Ashley Ahline (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) had seven digs for SXU on the night, while sophomore libero Erin Sebo (Downers Grover, Ill./St. Scholastica/Downers Grove North) posted 19 digs defensively for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (18-20 overall/6-4 CCAC) finishes fourth in the CCAC final regular-season standings and will take the No. 4 seed into this weekend’s eight-team CCAC Volleyball Tournament, which begins on Friday, November 6, in Bourbonnais, Ill. The first round pairings for the tourney have yet to be announced.
