
This lecture series addresses the responsibilities of a Catholic university to its students, faculty, staff and the broader Catholic and civic communities. Speakers explore how Catholic universities are resources both for examining contemporary civic and social questions and for developing healthy, active spiritual lives.
September 24, 2009: Bishop Robert Morneau“Hungers of the Human Heart: A Catholic Poetic Perspective,” lecture and conversation with Bishop Morneau, Auxiliary Bishop of Green Bay, WI, author, poet, and popular speaker on spirituality. 6:30 p.m. in the Butler Reception Room of the Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd Street. Drawing on the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Jessica Powers, and others, Bishop Morneau will address such human longings as the hungers for intimacy, meaning and commitment
October 8, 2009: Mary Catherine Hilkert, O.P.“The Human Vocation and the Catholic University: Revisiting Gaudium et spes,” lecture and conversation with Dr. Hilkert, Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. 6:30 p.m. in the Butler Reception Room of the Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd Street. Professor Hilkert will consider three “signs of the times” today: the interrelatedness of all creation, the dignity and rights of women around the world, and the call to solidarity with the poor and marginalized.
November 17, 2009: Patrick McCormick“Bone of My Bone and Flesh of My Flesh: Uncovering the Beauty of the Stranger,” lecture and conversation with Dr. McCormick, Professor of Religious Studies at Gonzaga University in Washington. 6:30 p.m. in the Butler Reception Room of the Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd Street. Professor McCormick will explore the challenges of cultural and religious diversity and the importance of recognizing others as “bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh.”
