Saint Xavier University AAUP Statement on Diversity

AAUP supports the recruitment, professional development and retention of a diverse faculty.  Diversity strategic objective number eight, as set forth in the eight strategic directions endorsed by the Board of Trustees on May 12, 2004.  We applaud this objective as we recognize that a diverse faculty enriches a learning environment and contributes to the exchange of ideas.  In addition, the interest in creating a diverse population with in an institution of higher education has been affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court.  As the University works to realize these goals, we propose the following:

  1. Identify those schools and/or departments that are lacking in diversity and to put into place a concrete plan, adequately funded, to recruit qualified faculty from underrepresented populations. Data should break down diversity of faculty among adjunct, full-time tenure track, tenured and portion of full-time;
  2. Identify those schools and/or departments that have successfully recruited qualified faculty from underrepresented populations but that have been unable to retain such individuals and explore the factors that contribute to such faculty leaving the University;  and
  3. That consistent and ongoing efforts at the school and/or department level be implemented to facilitate understanding of the unique challenges of underrepresented faculty and that promote their retention.
