Jean Mehta earned a B.Sc. with Honors in Mathematics from the University of Birmingham, England. Upon graduation, she left England to work in Livingstone, Zambia, Central Africa, where she remained for seven years. After emigrating to the U.S., she earned an M.S. in Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by a D.A. (Doctor of Arts) in Computer Science from the same institution.
Dr. Mehta taught at North Park College (1985-87) and, since fall 1987, at Saint Xavier University where she now holds the rank of Professor. She has served as Chair of the Computer Science Department for five three-year terms, and as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for one three-year term. She has also served on the University Rank and Tenure Committee (three terms), the Academic Policies Committee, the Retention Committee, the University Website Committee, the College of Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee and the Deans' Council.
Over the years, she has taught most courses in the curriculum, but prefers to teach programming. Most of her research has centered on the effective teaching of programming, which includes innovative software as well as pedagogy. She has taught robotics and the creation of phone apps to high school students, and introduced Alice as a development environment for freshman in the computer science major.
Since 2013, Dr. Mehta has been involved in Community Based Learning (CBL) projects, in which her students work with not-for-profit organizations providing food, clothing and other support services for the residents of the southern suburbs of Chicago. To date the students have created databases and web based interfaces to enable these NPOs to better collect and report their data. This has been a very beneficial relationship for NPOs and students alike.
