Biography

Ray Taylor earned his Ph.D. in African History from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1996. His research focused on the history of colonialism in Francophone West Africa. He began teaching at Saint Xavier the same year. Since coming to SXU, he has taught courses in the history of Africa, the Middle East, the Indian Ocean, World Geography, and World History. He served as Chair of the Department of History and Political Science for nine years. He has also served on the Faculty Senate, the General Education Committee, and currently serves on the Faculty Affairs Committee. He is currently working on a book on French imperialism in the Senegal Valley and Mauritania during the nineteenth century, based on research in historical archives in France and West Africa.
