Honors Guest Lecture 2007-2008
Mr. John Hart - Caribou Clean Water Partnership
John Hart, environmental activist and co-founder of the Caribou Clean Water Partnership, will be the 2007-08 SXU Honors Program Annual Guest Lecturer. The lecture will be held on Tuesday, April 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Butler Reception Room.
His lecture is entitled, “A partnership for Clean Water: The Politics of Conservation.” Mr. Hart, currently the Phosphate Campaign Communications Manager of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, will describe work being done to prevent phosphate mining pollution in the Yellowstone region, and will share with the Saint Xavier community the values that have fueled his own quest to protect the sacred natural resources that he loves.
Mr. Hart is also an artist, who has taught digital media and who has exhibited his art in galleries and museums in New York and Connecticut. He also has illustrated the international “Prince Valiant” comic strip and most recently finished a post as a county administrator and director of economic development.
Mr. Hart’s lecture addresses issues that SXU Honors Program students are exploring in their interdisciplinary Honors Science Class, “The Politics and Science of Water Pollution.” After a semester of studying water management and conducting fieldwork in local lakes and streams, a group of the students will accompany SXU biology professor, Tatiana Tatum and philosophy professor Thomas Thorp to southern Idaho, where they will engage in hands on work with Caribou Clean Water members.
The lecture is free and open to the public. It will be followed by an informal Q and A with Mr. Hart; refreshments will be served.
