Honors Guest Lecture 2008-2009
Sr. Deidre Mullan, Director, Mercy Global Concern at the United Nations
Sr. Deidre Mullan, director of Mercy Global Concern (MGC), will be the 2008-2009 Honors Program Annual Guest Lecturer. Sr. Mullan represents the Sisters of Mercy worldwide at the United Nations, where she works to promote “justice work at the local, national, and international level,” critique “social sins” by lobbying for systemic change, and challenge governments to implement policies and programs that promote economic, environmental, and social justice.
Sr. Mullan’s lecture is entitled “The Vision Still has its Time: The UN, Catholic Social Teaching and Global Citizenship.” She will focus upon the Millennium Development Goals(MDG) unanimously adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000 to make significant and measurable improvements in providing better healthcare and education and eliminating extreme hunger and poverty by 2015. Sr. Mullan will address the conditions that must be met in order to achieve those goals.
The lecture, co-sponsored by the Office for University Mission and Heritage, will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 6:30 pm in the Butler Reception Room. It is free and open to the public.
