Welcome Message from the Dean
With the spotlight on the drastic shortage of nurses in our nation, many individuals are interested in the profession of nursing. Saint Xavier University's School of Nursing offers many features for potential students.
- Center of Excellence: In 2010, the National League for Nursing awarded the School of Nursing designation as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education for "creating an environment that enhances student learning and professional development." We are one of only 17 schools in the nation to receive this distinction.
- Location: We are a mid-size university located within Chicago. Clinical practice sites are multiple, varied and include major hospitals, inner city shelters, community practices, schools and clinics.
- Exceptional faculty: The majority of the nursing faculty have or will earn their Ph.D. They are innovative and creative in their teaching with an emphasis on the preparation of superb clinicians.
- Core values: The School of Nursing embodies the values of the University, which includes compassion, respect, caring and hospitality.
Our School demonstrates the flexibility, openness and quality education students are seeking as evidenced by:
- The School has a very diverse student population with 41 percent from minority groups.
- Sixty-five percent of our undergraduates represent the first generation in their families to attend college.
- Seventy-two percent of our students come from disadvantaged economic and/or educational backgrounds and receive support in the SON to help them achieve their goals.
- Financial aid packages are available promptly after admission; applicants can request additional information during the admission process.
- The SON Health Center serves the University students, faculty and staff as well as those citizens from surrounding communities who are uninsured or underinsured.
- Nursing faculty practice in a wide variety of settings, lending current expertise to their teaching.
- Our innovative, streamlined admission process for qualified master's students to the doctorate of nursing practice at Rush University is one of the first in the nation.
- Our graduates maintain leadership positions nationally and internationally with deanships, executive positions in health care agencies and other universities.
- Our highly-regarded family nurse practitioner program, which prepares nurses for advanced practice licensure, complements the generalist master's prepared clinical nurse leader track, the MSN/MBA dual degree and the post master's nurse educator certificate are additional options at the graduate level.
We are a Center of Excellence! Come join us and be a part of a rich tradition of caring and service.
