Spanish Language, Literature and Civilization
The following non-SXU sponsored programs offer courses taught with host institution students. You can take both Spanish language and courses in other disciplines, taught in Spanish.
Argentina
IFSA Butler: Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Mendoza
Located in the foothills of the Andes, Mendoza is known for its outdoor activities: mountain climbing, hiking, skiing, horseback riding and rafting.
Course Offerings
- Advanced Spanish and Argentine Culture (3 credit hours) required
- This course is equivalent to SXU's SPAN 210
- If you have completed SPAN 210, SPAN 200 or 300 level, credit is available
- Regional Development (3 credit hours) optional
- Three - four courses from the following at UNCuyo:
- Students can also take courses at the Universidad de Congreso offering international relations and social science coursework.

Chile
IFSA-Butler: Chilean Universities Program, Santiago
Chile's capital, Santiago, lies in a valley bordered by the Andes on the east and the Chilean Coastal mountain range on the west. The city's thriving neighborhoods offer museums, art and great restaurants. Outdoor activities abound outside of the city, including climbing, horseback riding, skiing and kayaking.
Course Offerings
- Advanced Spanish: Grammar, Composition and Conversation (3 credit hours) required
- This course is equivalent to SXU's SPAN 210
- If you have completed SPAN 210, SPAN 200 or 300 level, credit is available
- One of the following courses is required:
- History and Society in Contemporary Chile (3 credit hours)
- Directed Research Project (6 credit hours)
- Plus two - three courses at the following universities:

Costa Rica
IFSA-Butler: Universidad Nacional, Heredia
La Ciudad de las Flores is known for its Spanish colonial architecture. Only seven miles from the capital of San Jose, Heredia still feels like a small city. The province is known for its coffee plantations and volcanic national parks.

- If you have completed SPAN 210, SPAN 200 or 300 level, credit is available
- Students can choose to take one of the following program courses:
- Social History of Costa Rica (3 credit hours) This course is equivalent to SXU's SPAN 231
- 20th Century Latin American Literature (3 credit hours)
This course is equivalent to SXU's SPAN 391: Special Topics in Literature

Spain
CIEE Liberal Arts: Barcelona
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, a region in northeastern Spain with its own distinctive history, culture and language. Its metropolitan area is set between the mountains and the Mediterranean. Walking through the city, one can observe 2,000 years of architectural history - Roman ruins, the network of narrow streets in the Old Town, the 19th Century Eixample district with its original examples of Modernista architecture - contrasting with the ultramodern showpieces that continue to redesign its skyline.

Spain
University of Minnesota: International Program in Toledo
Perched on a rocky ridge, La Ciudad Imperial's narrow streets and plazas reflect is rich history of Roman, Muslim and Jewish inhabitants. Located one hour south of Madrid, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is an excellent base to explore the rest of Spain.
