The Squeaky Weal Lecture Series promotes thoughtful consideration and civil discourse on issues of public concern, with a focus on the religious, moral, and/or ethical implications of such issues for the common good.
All lectures are free and open to the public. Each is followed by a time for questions and discussion and will end at or before 8 p.m.
"Private Catholic/Public Servant: A Jurist Reflects on Faith and Profession" with Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke at 6:30 p.m. in the Butler Reception Room of the Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd Street. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Saint Xavier University Honors Program.
Justice Burke will discuss the dynamic and sometimes stressful relationship between her personal beliefs and the obligations and pressures inherent in her public role. Her reflections will speak to all who seek a balance between faith and profession in their own lives.
On October 24, 2002, Cardinal George’s presentation for the University’s Squeaky Weal Lecture Series raised the topic, “Defending Yourself While Forgiving Your Enemies” (PDF). He explored notions such as upholding justice, maintaining order and pacifism through a historic lens. After evaluating the conditions for a moral or just war, he encouraged his audience to remember: “The goal is not an imposed peace which is only the absence of war, but a healing of relationships so that we can live together in mutual respect and even in friendship across national and cultural boundaries.”
