The Squeaky Weal Lecture Series promotes thoughtful consideration and civil discourse on issues of public concern, with a focus on the religious, moral, and/or ethical implications of such issues for the common good.
All lectures are free and open to the public. Each is followed by a time for questions and discussion and will end at or before 8 p.m.
"Assignment Afghanistan: A Chicago Reporter's Journey to War and What He Learned There" with WGN-TV newsman Tom Negovan at 6:30 p.m. in the Butler Reception Room of the Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd Street.
Embedded for a week with U.S. troops in Afghanistan, Tom Negovan reported on their lives, their patriotism, their sacrifices in the name of duty and freedom. He will reflect on that experience and on the difficulty of the soldiers' dual mission of befriending the local population and discovering and defeating Al-Qaeda and Taliban operatives.
"Private Catholic/Public Servant: A Jurist Reflects on Faith and Profession" with Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke at 6:30 p.m. in the Butler Reception Room of the Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd Street. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Saint Xavier University Honors Program.
Justice Burke will discuss the dynamic and sometimes stressful relationship between her personal beliefs and the obligations and pressures inherent in her public role. Her reflections will speak to all who seek a balance between faith and profession in their own lives.
