Testing Programs Information and Instructions

Advising and Educational Planning

The Advising and Educational Planning Services Office has full or partial administrative responsibility of several academic examination programs, including: the University’s Placement Program and the College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP®).

Exams the AEPS Does Not Oversee: The Center does not administer, enforce policies, or establish criteria for admission-related testing (ACT, GRE, MAT). Contact the Admissions Office for further information regarding these exams. The career/personality-related testing (Meyers-Briggs, Strong Inventory) is handled by the Counseling & Career Services. They may be reached at (773) 298-3131. Questions regarding the Excelsior Exam can be answered on-line at Excelsior's Web site or by calling (888) 72EXAMS.

Exam Registration: Students register for the Placement Program and on-campus CLEP tests through the AEPS in Room A-206 of the Warde Academic Center. Follow each exam program link to find more information on registration policies and procedures. General information for these programs may also be found in the AEPS.

Exam Programs: Following is a list of primary exam programs with brief descriptions of each. More detailed policy information may be found by clicking on the title.

Placement Program: The AEPS oversees Mathematics and English placement testing. Additionally, the AEPS assists the Foreign Languages program with Spanish, French, Arabic & Polish placement tests and the School of Nursing with a nurse entrance test. Contact the Advising and Educational Planning Services at (773) 298-3011, Room A-206 of the Warde Academic Center to schedule a placement test. There is no charge for placement tests.

Excelsior® Exams: Formerly Regents/ACT-PEP, Excelsior is a standardized credit-by-exam program. This exam is affiliated with the School of Nursing. SXU accepts selected Excelsior Exams that substitute certain required courses in the Nursing major. Two (2) nursing exams are available to RN completion students; SXU accepts the exams in Abnormal Psychology, for those who qualify.

CLEP® Exams: CLEP is a standardized credit-by-exam program that offers exams in a wide variety of general and subject areas that cover introductory college course material. All students are welcome to participate in the program to test out of core and/or major requirements or to obtain elective credit.

Note on testing services: The AEPS does not serve as a proctoring center for classes or other exam programs, unless specified in these web pages. In the interest of community service, the AEPS will on occasion permit students, whether affiliated with SXU or not, to take correspondence exams in its office. Such arrangements are made at the discretion of the AEPS, and a service fee will be charged.
