Academic Distinguished Alumni Awards

The Distinguished Academic Alumni Awards honor those graduates whose lives most successfully emulate the values designated by each school or college of the University.

As part of out Homecoming and Family Week festivities, winners of the Distinguished Academic Alumni Awards  will be honored  at the All-Alumni Celebration on Friday, October 3, 2008 .

To nominate a candidate please submit a written nomination letter (250 words or less) that includes the name, address and phone number of the nominee, the name of the award being considered and an explanation of how the alumnus/a exhibits the criteria of that particular award.

College of Arts & Sciences Academic Distinguished Alumni Award

The College of Arts & Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award honors an alumnus/a whose professional, personal, civic accomplishments exemplify the mission of the College. Specifically, the award will honor an individual whose commitment to life-long learning and critical inquiry, responsible citizenship, and conscientious practice in professional or community endeavors is evident. Graham School of Management Academic Distinguished Alumni Award

School of Education, George K. McGuire Academic Distinguished Alumni Award

George K. McGuire (1918 – 1972) was appointed to the faculty of the Education Center (now the School of Education) at Saint Xavier College in 1959 after receiving the Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago. Promoted to the rank of Professor in 1962, he served as Director of the Education Center from 1969 through 1971. Prior to his association with the College (now a University), Dr. McGuire was Assistant Principal of the Laboratory School of the University of Chicago, where he served on the faculty. He taught at Loyola University and in the Chicago Public Schools and was published in the field of education.  In addition to his academic and scholarly contributions, George McGuire was a caring and humane person. A thoughtful speaker himself, he encouraged his students to speak well. A focused listener, Dr. McGuire encouraged his students to listen carefully and actively. A generous teacher, George McGuire was a model for students in a teacher preparation program. The School of Education celebrates the contributions and traits of George K. McGuire by selecting a person who represents the same qualities to receive the award.
