Frequently Asked Questions from Parents

We’re here to help!

Q: What if my student does not get along with his/her roommate?
A: Have your son/daughter talk with their RA about the situation. Room changes are possible in certain circumstances. The RA and the Residence Life staff are happy to help.

Q: How will I know how my son/daughter is doing with their studies?
A: The only way is to ask your son/daughter. First-year mid-term reports will be sent to your student.

Q: What are some of the campus organizations available to my student. Can I learn more about them?
A: There are a number of campus organizations available. A list of them can be found at www.sxu.edu/students/organizations.asp or by calling (773) 298-3122.

Q: How safe is the SXU campus?
A: The Public Safety Department on campus is available 24 hours a day and patrols the campus. The department also provides a protective escort service. Emergency phones are situated across the campus.

Q: What do we do if our student is homesick?
A: The best thing to do is to give them time to adjust. You should encourage them to speak with their RA. Students can also speak with their academic advisors, professors, and the Counseling Center staff.

Q: What should my student do if he/she is ill?
A: The SXU Health Center is open Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and Saturday 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. In case of emergency, students are instructed to contact the Public Safety Office at extension 3911 or dial 911.
