2008 Sister Mary Josetta Butler Scholarship

Established by the Board of Trustees, in honor of Sister Mary Josetta Butler, RSM, this Scholarship awards $2,000 for tuition, fees and books to two students who give evidence of integrating the study of religion and/or theology with intellectual inquiry in other fields of study.  One scholarship is designed for upper-class students who have completed two or more religious studies courses; the second is for those who are first or second year students or first year transfer students who have completed only one Religious Studies course.

Sister Josetta was chief administrator of Saint Xavier College from 1956 to 1963.  Sister Josetta devoted her talents and energy to the cause of excellence in higher education.  She believed strongly in the value of a liberal arts education as the foundation and motivation for a future career of service.  The scholarship, which bears her name, is intended to reinforce and promote this idea of the “liberal education of the Christian person.”

Guidelines

To apply for this scholarship each faculty-nominated or self-nominated student must submit an application form (PDF) and one of two possible essays.

The first option is to submit a brief essay (2-3 pages) that explores how a student understands the way religion and/or their study of religion at Saint Xavier University informs intellectual inquiry in other fields of study, which may include:

  1. A student’s major field of study
  2. A student’s understanding of or appreciation for the liberal arts
  3. A student’s future career

In this essay, students will be expected to give some consideration to or evidence of the role of religious studies within SXU’s General Education Program and what it might mean to study at a Catholic university.

The second option is to submit a previously written essay that the student believes demonstrates the impact of religious studies and/or theology on another field of study, and attests to the role of religious studies within SXU’s General Education Program and what it might mean to study at a Catholic university.

These materials are due by March 24th and should be sent to:
