Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Steering Committee

Minutes January 24, 2008

  1. Happy 2008!
  2. Alcohol Awareness Month
    1. Nursing students
A couple of nursing students have approached Michelle about participating with AODP this semester for the senior project  Julie mentioned she would ask Sandy Burkhart again about psychology students participating.
    2. Programming ideas
We talked about a guest speaker; Michelle brought up the idea of maybe focusing on prescription drug abuse.  She’ll look in to this a bit, maybe there is someone in the School of Nursing with a particular interest in this topic.  We also talked about Thursday Night Alternatives and whether to continue them this year.  We had some success with programming last semester, but on Tues and Wed nights.  Is the point of these events to really offer an alternative on a specific day, or to provide awareness and education?
Rae Joyce said the nursing students and RAs could work together to get bulletin boards up in the halls.  Also put boards up in the Shannon Center, WAC, etc.
If you have any suggestions of comments regarding events for AAM, or have an interest in being more involved in the planning and implementation of events, please let Michelle know  ASAP.  Thank you!
  3. AODP sponsoring ½ time promotions at February 27th basketball game!
Talked about also sponsoring a game in April, and mentioning these opportunities to Katy Thompson as suggestions for sanctions.
  4. CORE and ACHA survey results (see below)
Terry asked, “Do you think we are better than CORE averages because we are mainly female?  (Do men drink and smoke more than women?)
Julie brought up the idea of ‘on-going’ assessment, and we talked about AODP repeating this survey.  Is there money to support performing this again sooner than every four years?  Are we getting the results and using them effectively to support spending the money?
