Entering his 10th year at the helm of the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team, Tom O'Malley has put together some impressive seasons. The 2004-05 season may have arguably been the best ever as the Cougars finished with an impressive 30-7 overall record, a 10-2 mark in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC), and an Elite 8 appearance at the 2005 NAIA National Tournament. O'Malley was also named the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) NAIA Division I Co-Coach of the Year following the season.
Being recognized by his peers for a job well done should be proof enough that O'Malley knows a thing or two about coaching men's basketball. However, for the skeptics, his career record at Saint Xavier of 233-85 (.733) should eliminate any remaining doubts. Last season, O'Malley achieved a 20-win season for the ninth consecutive year. He has averaged 26 wins per season over his nine-year collegiate coaching career.
In addition to his impressive career record, O'Malley's Cougars have captured or shared the CCAC crown four of the last nine seasons. His overall CCAC record is an impressive 87-26 (.770). O'Malley's teams have also made it a habit of gaining bids to the NAIA National Tournament. The Cougars have earned a bid seven of the last eight years, including last season when SXU fell to Carroll College (Mont.) in first-round action in Kansas City, Mo.
O'Malley has an impressive resume when it comes to coaching basketball. He has been named Coach of the Year 22 times over his career. His overall win total now stands at 707 wins, which includes his previous coaching stints at Leo, Reavis, and Evergreen Park High Schools.
O'Malley is a member of the Illinois High School Associaiton (IHSA) Hall of Fame, the Leo High School Hall of Fame and the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame. He has also been a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches for 27 years.
He graduated from Leo High School and attended Loras College (Iowa) for his bachelor of arts in economics which he received in 1963. He received his master's degree in education and administration from Loyola University (Ill.) and has also accumulated over 60 hours of post-graduate work.
O'Malley has been married for 41 years to his wife, Carol, and has three grown children, Tom, Mike and Carrie. He also has 11 grandchildren: Courtney, Molly, Shea, Ryan, Tara, Brennan, Matthew, Nolan, Aidan, Brendan and Anne Catherine.
