The Sisters of Mercy founded Saint Xavier University in 1846 and continue to sponsor the institution as it grows into the future. Affiliated with the Campus Ministry, MercyCare represents the charism of the Sisters of Mercy, providing support and concern for the well being of all in the Saint Xavier University community.
Sister Mary Loftus, R.S.M., of MercyCare offers warm hospitality, compassionate listening, and a caring spirit to all associated with the University. She also provides information about both the Sisters of Mercy and Mercy Volunteer Corps. Her door is always open! Please stop by her office in the Mercy Ministry Center, call ext. 3125, or e-mail loftus@sxu.edu.
The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas is an international community of Roman Catholic women vowed to serve people who suffer poverty, sickness, and ignorance, with a special concern for women and children. In innovative and traditional ways they address human needs through collaborative efforts in education, healthcare, housing and pastoral and social service. Please contact Sister Mary for more information.
A program of the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Volunteer Corps (MVC) invites women and men to service with people who are economically poor or marginalized. Volunteers commit to compassionate service, simple lifestyle in community and spiritual growth.
Mercy Volunteers serve within the continental U.S. and Guyana, South America, with additional international sites possible. National volunteers make a one-year commitment beginning the first week of August; international volunteers make a two-year commitment.
Matthew Lorenzo, '06, is Saint Xavier University's most recent graduate to join Mercy Volunteer Corps. Representatives from MVC visit campus at least once a semester to talk to interested students. Please contact Sister Mary for the date of their upcoming visit.
