Catholic Colloquium Series
This lecture series honors the responsibilities of a Catholic university to serve its students, faculty, staff and the broader Catholic and civic communities by providing opportunities to examine contemporary civic and social questions in the light of a vibrant, socially committed faith. Speakers in this series also explore ideas and issues that foster the development of healthy, active spiritual lives.
All lectures are free and open to the public. All take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Butler
Reception Room of the Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd Street, Chicago.

"The Ethics of War: Two Perspectives," a special two-part presentation, opens with Mr. Cordaro, pastoral minister at St. Margaret Mary parish (Naperville) and longstanding member of Pax Christi. Mr. Cordaro will discuss "Redemptive Violence or Redemptive Suffering: The Role of Religion in the Quest for Peace."

"The Ethics of War: Two Perspectives" continues with Father Barry, campus minister at SXU and military chaplain who has served seven summer tours of duty at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (Germany), which receives wounded troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. Fr. Barry will discuss "Justice and the Use of Force in the Catholic Tradition."

"Beyond Death Panels: Ethical Issues in Care at the End of Life" will draw on the considerable expertise of Dr. Sulmasy, a Franciscan friar, physician, and bioethicist who is the Kilbride-Clinton Professor of Medicine and Ethics in the Department of Medicine and the Divinity School and Associate Director of the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics, all at the University of Chicago. Appointed by President Obama, Dr. Sulmasy also serves on the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues.

"Mercifulness Today: Catherine McAuley's Vision" will look at the importance of higher education from the perspective of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy, the religious order she founded. The author or editor of several books on Catherine McAuley, Sister Sullivan is one of the foremost scholars on the Sister of Mercy founder. Her latest book, a comprehensive biography entitled The Path of Mercy: The Life of Catherine McAuley, may be available at the lecture.
