Dr. Daniel Sulmasy, O.F.M.

The Kilbride-Clinton Professor of Medicine and Ethics in the Department of Medicine and the Divinity School at the University of Chicago, Dr. Sulmasy will speak on "Beyond Death Panels: Ethical Issues in Care at the End of Life." This lecture is co-sponsored by the Saint Xavier University School of Nursing.
A Franciscan friar, a practicing physician and a bioethicist with a doctoral degree in philosophy, Dr. Sulmasy is associate director of the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago. President Obama appointed him to the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues in April 2010. His research interests include the ethics of end-of-life decision making, ethics education and spirituality in medicine.

CME Group Executive Chairman Terry Duffy will speak on "The Importance of Ethics in Business."
CME Group is the parent of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Inc., the Board of Trade of the City of Chicago, Inc., the New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc., and the Commodity Exchange, Inc. Mr. Duffy has served as executive chairman of the corporation since its formation in 2007. Appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a member of the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board, Mr. Duffy frequently testifies before congressional committees on financial matters. He serves on the boards of several civic and philanthropic organizations, including the Board of Trustees of Saint Xavier University.

"The Role of Public Libraries in the Digital Age" at 6:30 p.m. in the Butler Reception Room of the Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd Street.
Commissioner Dempsey spoke in regards of the changing role of public libraries as educational resources for students and adults in an age dominated by digital technology. How do libraries meet an urban public's reading, listening and viewing needs? How do libraries supplement or compensate for students' experiences in under-resourced schools?

Saint Xavier University presented President Christine Wiseman, J.D., "A Seven Year Odyssey on Texas Death Row" in the Butler Reception Room of the Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd Street. This presentation was the 12th Annual Honors Program Guest Lecture, co-sponsored by the Office for University Mission and Heritage.
President Wiseman discussed her pro bono work on the Billy Conn Gardner death penalty case and its impact on her assessment of the constraints on justice within the American legal system.
