Tips for Eating Healthy in College
1. Eat Breakfast.
Why is eating breakfast so important?
- Breakfast is essential because your body needs to "break the fast" that it goes into every night while you sleep. When people skip breakfast, some may go as long as 18 hours without food. This semi-starvation can create physical, intellectual and behavioral problems; especially in children.
- Without breakfast, your metabolism goes into "famine" mode. The "famine" mode; which increases the body's insulin response, results in an increase of fat storage and weight gain. Eating a nutritious breakfast aids in the body's ability to regulate insulin and control weight.
- Breakfast is the "jump start" of the day. Breakfast gives you more energy right from the start of your day. Your brain needs fuel to function to help you perform at your best.
- Eating breakfast reduces hunger throughout the day. Eating a healthy breakfast plays a major role in maintaining good health and preventing obesity.
2. Carbohydrates provide energy, but, are you eating the right Carbs?
- One serving of carbohydrate is 15 grams.
- Women should aim for 30 to 45 grams of carb per meal
- Men 45 to 60 grams of carb per meal.
- Snacks should be about 15 to 20 grams per serving.
