Counseling, Individual and Group

Eligibility

Confidential counseling services are available free of charge to current students. Alumni are also welcome to use counseling services free of charge for a maximum of three sessions.

Confidentiality

Counselors maintain strict professional standards of confidentiality and privacy. The exceptions to confidentiality are when you indicate or a counselor believes you present an imminent danger to yourself or others, a child or vulnerable adult is being subjected to abuse or neglect, or a court order requires disclosure of counseling files. Our files are separate from your academic and health records. In order to ensure the highest quality of care, we sometimes consult with clinical supervisors and fellow counselors. This consultation falls within the bounds of confidentiality and all efforts are made to ensure your privacy.

Characteristics Specific To Individual Counseling:

The first session is usually spent in a thorough exploration of your presenting problems as well as other areas of your life that are likely to be affected. In most cases, you and your counselor will set short-term goals to be achieved within 8 sessions. If your needs may be better met by another agency or person, a referral to that source will be recommended and facilitated your counselor.

Counseling appointments typically last 45 minutes. If you need to cancel your appointment, then we ask that you notify your counselor as soon as possible.

Characteristics Specific To Group Counseling:

Group counseling is offered on an as-needed basis and typically focuses on concerns that are best discussed among peers. Such topics may include improving relationships and coping with loss or grief.
