A certificate is defined as an attestation of a skill or competency in a focused area of study that can be used in a specific activity or occupation. The purpose of a certificate program in Polish is to encourage students to develop skill in Polish language and culture. The certificate, then, will be valuable to students who plan on careers within Polish-American organizations, or in international business, foreign service and other careers with links to Poland.
The certificate program in Polish consists of twelve credit hours, or four three-hour courses.
At least six hours in Polish language are required. A language proficiency test is available for students with some level of command in Polish. Although students can gain up to twelve credit hours after taking the proficiency test, no more than six credit hours obtained in this fashion will count toward the Certificate in Polish. Students may also fulfill their language requirement by enrolling in an accredited study-abroad program in Polish.
The remainder of the Certificate Program must be completed with courses from the following list, allowing students to select either additional Polish language courses or courses in Polish culture. One of the courses for a Certificate in Polish may be a course in 20th century Eastern European history or in contemporary Eastern European business, providing a context for understanding contemporary Poland.
All courses are three credit hours.
