English Learning Goals

Goal One

The English program is dedicated to each major’s understanding of English as a discipline and to each student’s understanding of the goals and methods of contemporary literary study. Each major should:

  • Demonstrate competence in literary analysis and apply critical models;
  • Understand the differences stemming from class, race, ethnicity, sexuality and gender as expressed in texts;
  • Understand the controversies inherent in literary study.

Goal Two

The English program is dedicated to the major’s experiencing the study of English as a reflection of values. Each major should:

  • Demonstrate the ability to discuss implicit or explicit values reflected in texts;
  • Demonstrate the ability to interpret and contextualize moral convictions contained in literary materials.

Goal Three

The English program is dedicated to each major’s achieving his/her full potential as an inquisitive, articulate, and analytical individual. Each major should:

  • Demonstrate competence in academic writing;
  • Demonstrate competence in writing for varied, specific and non-academic audiences;
  • Demonstrate and apply literary research skills;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills gained in the major.
