The Grounds Maintenance Department at SXU is a full time operation. During the growing season, the primary responsibility of this department is turf grass, this includes mowing, watering and fertilizing both Athletic and aesthetic turf. Along with these duties, the department is responsible for planting flowers, pulling weeds and maintaining ornamental landscape plantings.

In addition to regular duties, the changing seasons also provide a challenge to the Grounds Department. In the spring, mulch and flower beds are prepared prior to commencement and in autumn, falling leaves must be removed from the campus. Wintertime changes the department’s priority to snow and ice removal. Year round, the grounds crew is busy and must rely on a competent staff to achieve these goals.

The crew is led by Supervisor Scott Russo, and assisted by Leo Augle, Chris Brennan, Joe Hayes and Steve Morgan who round out the full time staff. Traditionally, part-time help and student workers have enhanced the award winning operation.

In the Summer of 2000, Saint Xavier University was honored by the city of Chicago with the 2000 First Place Public Institution City Wide Award by the Mayor’s Award Program. This honor was bestowed upon the Grounds Maintenance Department by Mayor Richard M. Daley in appreciation for enhancing the environment and community through landscaping.
