Schedule of Events - 2008

Parents registered for Parent Orientation are welcome to attend one, part, or both days of the program as their schedule allows.

Day 1

  
9:30 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. Parent Check-In & Breakfast (McGuire Hall Lobby)
Begin the day with the Parent Orientation check-in, enjoy a light breakfast and receive your program materials. Staff will be available to welcome you and answer any questions.
10:15 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Welcome (McGuire Hall)
Meet members of the University Administration, staff, and FOCUS Leaders at this official kickoff to your summer visit.
10:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. Meet the Parents (Butler Reception Room)
Enjoy this unique opportunity to meet other parents, explore your commonalities and participate in some fun activities. Hosted by Counseling and Career Services.
11:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Meet the Offices Part I (Butler Reception Room)
During this session you’ll have an opportunity to learn about the Byrne Memorial Library, Public Safety, Chartwells Dining Services and Information Services (academic technology). Come with questions.
12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. Lunch (SXU Diner)
It’s already time for food! Re-energize with good food and conversation. You’ll have an opportunity to meet more of our terrific SXU staff during lunch, too.
1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. The Mercy Tradition (Butler Reception Room)
Why is SXU unique? What connections can be made between service to the community and what you’re learning in the classroom? Perspectives on the core values of respect, excellence, compassion, service, hospitality, integrity, diversity and learning for life will be shared.
2:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Taking Care of Business (Butler Reception Room)
Learn about the Cougar Card, TCF Bank Services, Saint Xavier Today, Student Health Insurance and Campus Connections: Student Employment.
2:30 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. Intro to Advising (McGuire Hall)
Learn the basics of course requirements and important aspects of academic advising and scheduling.
3:15 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Parents’ Reception (Bishop Quarter Room)
Join Saint Xavier University’s leadership, the vice presidents, deans, faculty and staff for an informal reception; mix and mingle, ask questions, and experience SXU’s hospitality at its best.
4:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Meet the Offices Part II (McGuire Hall)
During this session, you’ll have an opportunity to learn about the Health Center, Counseling and Career Services, Shannon Athletic Center, and Campus Ministry. Bring your questions.
4:30 p.m. - 5:15 p.m. Policies for Parents & Safety @ SXU (McGuire Hall)
Find out about the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), SXU’s Parental Notification Policy, the Student Code of Conduct and other policies relevant to your student’s time at SXU. Also Public Safety/Campus Police and Student Affairs staff will answer your questions about the safety of our campus and our continual emergency preparedness.
5:15 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Student Financial Services (McGuire Hall)
Meet representatives from Student Financial Services who will provide tips and strategies to help you understand your rights and responsibilities concerning financial aid eligibility and payment obligations. This session is for students and parents.
6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Dinner and "A Day in the Life" (Butler Reception Room)
Enjoy a delicious dinner with fellow parents, faculty and staff before the evening’s activities. Learn about how college affects students and what you might expect as you make the transition to being the parent of a college student. Hear from SXU administrators who are parents of college students, and meet parents of current and past SXU students.
7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. FOCUS Theatre (McGuire Hall)
Don’t miss this exceptional performance! Our talented team of FOCUS Leaders will introduce a wide variety of campus issues through unique skits and performances.
8:30 p.m. - 9:45 p.m. Evening Entertainment (McGuire Hall)
Join us for awesome original entertainment by Mission IMPROVable! Audience participation encouraged!
9:45 p.m. - ??? Late Night at Gilhooley's (Gilhooley’s Grande Saloon)
Mosey on over to Gilhooley’s (across 103rd Street from SXU) and enjoy pub grub and late night entertainment! Cash and credit cards accepted.

Day 2
8:00 a.m. Shannon Athletic Center Open (Shannon Center)
Take this time to run on the track, workout in the Fitness Center, play racquetball, or use anything else the facility offers. Present your nametag for entry.
9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Continental Breakfast (SXU Diner)
Start the day off right with a continental breakfast.
9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. College 101 (Butler Reception Room)
Learn more about what life at Saint Xavier University will be like for your student and meet representatives from Student Affairs offices.
10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. SXU Parenthood (S-101)
Learn about opportunities for involvement as an SXU Parent! Hosted by Alumni and Parent Relations.
11:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Student Panel (S-101)
Enjoy this opportunity to meet some of our current FOCUS Leaders and learn about student life at SXU. Feel free to ask questions!
11:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. FOCUS on the Core Values (McDonough Chapel)
Experience the Saint Xavier faith community and core values. Members of all faith traditions are warmly welcomed.
12:15 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. Campus Community Barbecue (O’Malley Quad and SXU Diner)
New students and parents are invited to this summertime cookout.
1:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. I've taught them all they need to know ... of have I? (S-101)
After 18 years of parenting, letting go can be hard. While parenting never ends, this is the time to negotiate a changing relationship with your student. Student Affairs staff will be on hand to share tips and resources and to help you navigate your role in your student’s life while still supporting their independence. Learn how to help your student overcome obstacles, changes in communication and how to distinguish real problems from normal adjustment issues.
2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Campus/Office Tour (Tour leaves from Main Entrance outside Butler Reception Room)
Participate in a parents’ tour of campus, important offices, and residence halls at the Chicago Campus or take time for personal business.
3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. SXU Road to Success (Butler Reception Room and Student Lounge)
Find out just what’s available at SXU and get your student on the Road to Success! Be sure to visit both the Butler Reception Room and the Student Lounge. You will receive your SXU Parent gift upon completing the orientation evaluation form. Students and Parents finish orientation after completing “the Road” and checking out of the residence hall (if applicable, please return keys to the Campus Life office, L-103).
