Department Participation in FOCUS

We are looking forward to another exciting summer at SXU, planning the arrival of new students and parents who will participate in 4 two-day sessions of Freshmen Orientation Centered on University Services (FOCUS) and Parent Orientation. In the process of making arrangements for these important programs, Student Affairs again invites you to help welcome these new students and parents to campus.

The dates for FOCUS and Parent Orientation 2008 are as follows:

• Session 1: June 17-18
• Session 2: June 24-25
• Session 3: July 15-16
• Session 4: July 22-23

Session Highlights

Each session will include the following highlights (complete program schedules will be available from Campus Life, L-103):

Chapel Prayer Service

Day 2, 12:00 p.m. – 12:15 p.m., McDonough Chapel

The SXU campus community is invited to join us for this service as new students and parents are welcomed into the faith community.

SXU Road to Success

Day 2, 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Butler Reception Room and Student Lounge

All departments, programs, and offices are invited to participate in the “Road to Success” information fair.  As last year, academic programs and departments will be in the Student Lounge and service departments will be in the Butler Reception Room.  This event provides an opportunity for new students and their parents to visit with your department’s information table.  Use this time to get to know students, inform them of your services, and recruit them to participate in your programs!  This event was rated very highly in the past, and is useful for students, parents, faculty, and staff alike!  If your department will participate, please indicate so on the Participation Reply form (PDF) form so that a space may be reserved for you.  Please reserve your space by Friday, May 23!

Miscellaneous Details

Day 2, afternoon

After the formal closing of each FOCUS session, students may stop by offices or departments to address any outstanding details during their visit to campus.  Students may need to make payments or take care of other miscellaneous tasks; this will be their first real opportunity to do so during FOCUS.  Please note that students and parents may visit your office on either FOCUS day!

Handouts

Both students and parents attending orientation will receive folders including pertinent SXU information.  If you have a flyer or brochure you would like included in the folders for students, parents, or both; please provide copies (575 first year students, 500 transfer students, 350 parents, 1425 all) to the Campus Life office (L-103) by Friday, May 23.  Please be sure copies are labeled so we know for which folder they are intended.

Please complete and return the Participation Reply form (PDF) to reserve your space in the Road to Success and to let us know of your intent to provide materials for the informational folders.  This form should be returned to the Campus Life office (L-103 or faxed to ×4197) no later than Friday, May 23 to guarantee your space.
