Background

About Bishop John R. Gorman

The Institute is named in honor of Bishop John R. Gorman – priest, pastor, educator and Saint Xavier University trustee. Having earned both a Licentiate in Sacred Theology and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, Bishop Gorman taught in high school seminary, collegiate seminary, Loyola Pastoral Studies Institute and Notre Dame University Summer School. He also served as President of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, Pastor of St. Michael Parish in Orland Park and Episcopal Vicar of two vicariates in the Archdiocese of Chicago. He is a former Director of the Office of Parish/Pastoral Services, has coordinated lay ecclesial ministry training for the Archdiocese of Chicago, and is actively helping to plan a new Catholic high school in the Southwest suburbs. Bishop Gorman’s half-century of service to the Church and to Catholic education demonstrates a commitment the new Institute is proud to honor and emulate.

Mission Statement

The Bishop John R. Gorman Institute for Leadership in Catholic Education will provide professional development opportunities for educational leaders serving Catholic elementary and secondary schools in the greater Chicago area. As an expression of the University’s mission to serve the larger Catholic community, Saint Xavier will make programs and services affordable to Catholic schools.
