Dr. Althaus began her professional career teaching college biology in Ohio. She pursued her interest in the human side of biology - human health - and then the community aspects of promoting and protecting health.
After completing her doctoral studies in Ohio, she moved to Illinois to teach in a small private institution near Chicago.
Her interests widened to include the business side of health care and international business, particularly as it intersects with public health.
She came to Saint Xavier University in 1998 to develop, manage, and teach in public health and health administration programs in the Graham School of Management.

Dr. Althaus actively serves in many professional organizations and is an accreditation site reviewer for the Association for Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).
She also is involved in various consulting and training activities recently including DuPage County IPLAN committee, DuPage County Health Department, Barry University, Health Administration Graduate program, Children of Chornobyl Relief Fund, Central DuPage Hospital, Centers for Disease Control. She also reviews textbook proposals and manuscripts for various publishers.
Dr. Althaus' areas of interest in publication and presentation include the effects of managed care on the health care industry, the educational needs of health care personnel, and international health issues. Dr. Althaus has provided professional service in a variety of capacities in the community. She currently serves on the Community Memorial Foundation Board of Directors, Children of Chornobyl Relief Fund, Medical Advisory Board, Central DuPage Health System Medical Ethics Committee. Former affiliations include the Aabcor, Inc. Advisory Board Canticle Place Board of Directors, East-West Corporate Corridor Association Task Force, DuPage County Health Planning Council, India Development Service Board and others.
