History Programs

The Department offers two major programs in History. The History major is a 36-semester hour program that provides a general grounding in the historical discipline for students who do not seek Illinois secondary certification.

The History Education major is a 45-semester hour program designed for students who wish to become history and social science teachers in Illinois public high schools. As well as providing a strong foundation of historical  knowledge, this major focuses on concepts from related social science disciplines required for certification under the Illinois Content Area Standards for Educators. Students who seek Illinois secondary certification through the History Education major must also apply for admission to the School of Education minor program in Secondary Education.

A minor program in History is also available.

Explanations and Recommendations

  1. All HIST count toward satisfying the 6 semester-hour University Core requirement in history.
  2. All SOCSC and POLSC courses count toward satisfying the 9 semester-hour University Core requirement in social sciences.
  3. Select HIST courses may count toward satisfying the 6 semester-hour University Core requirement in Foreign Cultures/Foreign Languages. Students should consult their department advisors for an updated listing of courses that qualify.
  4. Selection of history electives should be made in consultation with a department advisor. These electives should be distributed in a manner that achieves broad geographical, chronological, thematic, methodological and comparative coverage.
  5. The study of a foreign language is highly recommended for students planning to pursue graduate study in history at either the M.A. level or the Ph.D. level.
