"Article rejected, un-authorized poster" Error

Q.

I tried to post a message to one of the SXU Discussion Lists but I got a message back that said, "Article rejected, un-authorized poster."

A.

The list owner has set the list configuration so that only subscribers to the list may post messages to it. The error message means that the list server can't find the address you are sending from on the list of subscribed addresses.

The list server does not understand that "@sxu.edu" and "@mail.sxu.edu" are the same address. The address you use when you subscribe to the list must match the address you use when you post to the list.

A mismatch can occur if you are using more than one mail client. For example, perhaps you use Outlook on campus but use the IMail web interface when you are at home. The return address in one client may be set to "@mail.sxu.edu" while the return address in the other client is set to the "@sxu.edu" form of your address.

A mismatch can also occur if you are only using one client but modify your return address after subscribing to the list.

In IMail's web messaging interface your return address is displayed each time you Compose a message.

To modify your return address in IMail's web interface select Change User Information from the Personal Account Options drop-down box.

Note: Instructions for Netscape Messenger are also available.

Problems with discussion list subscriptions can be avoided if you consistently use one form of the address or the other.

List owners also need to be aware of this restriction if they choose to only allow messages to be posted from subscribed addresses, especially if they then add or modify addresses manually through the List Administration screens.
