Residence Halls Network Wired Access Configuration
Installation Instructions for Windows
Materials Needed:
- Windows 98, 2000, or XP CD-ROM or Floppy Disks
- Network Interface Card (NIC) Manual and Software
- RJ-45 Category 5 (CAT-5) Network Patch Cable
Install Your Network Interface Card (NIC)
Follow manufacturer instructions on how to install your NIC card. SXU does not support NIC card installations. If you are having difficulty, contact the manufacturer or a local computer store that will be able to provide technical assistance in installing your card or install it for you for a nominal fee. Once installed, attach your CAT-5 network cable between your card and the wall jack.
NOTE: If your NIC card is not installed properly, your SXU connection will not operate correctly, and the SXU staff will not be able to offer you support.
I. After Successful Completion of NIC Card
- Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel. This will bring up the following window.

- Click on the Network icon. This will bring up a window that looks similar to the one below.

- If your NIC card is not listed here, then it has not been installed properly, and refer to the manufacturer documentation on how to install it. If Client for Netware Networks is listed, click once on it, and then on the Remove button to remove it, as it is not needed to connect to SXU.
- If you do not see Client for Microsoft Networks or TCP/IP listed, continue reading instructions. Otherwise, you can proceed to "Setting up your TCP/IP" below.
- To Install TCP/IP click the Add button, to bring up the following window. Choose Protocol, and click the Add button again.

- Choose Microsoft from the Manufacturers list, and then TCP/IP from the Network Protocols list. At this point, Windows may require your Windows 95/98 CD or Floppy Disks, so have them nearby before clicking the OK button.

II. Setting up your TCP/IP
- Once TCP/IP has been installed, click on TCP/IP in the Network window, and then click on the Properties button. This will bring up the window shown below. Make sure that Obtain an IP address automatically is selected.

- Next select the Gateway tab, and verify that no gateways are installed. If they are, remove them by clicking the Installed Gateways then clicking the Remove button. Do this for each gateway installed, so that no gateways are listed in the Installed Gateways window.

- Next click the DNS Configuration tab, and verify that Disable DNS is selected.

- Click the OK button at the bottom of the window. This will return you to the main Network window. In the main Network window click on the Identification tab.

- Under Computer name type in your SXU email address (do not include @sxu.edu). Under Workgroup, type RES, and finally under Computer Description type in a description of your computer.

- At this point if you are connecting from McCarthy or Morris Hall your computer should be set up for SXU. Click the OK button and allow the computer to restart. Again, Windows may require your CD or DISKS so have them handy. Proceed to Section III to verify that you are connected to the network.
III. Verifying you are ready to be on the Network
- To verify that your computer is ready to access the Internet, click on Start > Run and type WINIPCFG in the text box and click the OK button.

- From this new window, choose your NIC Card from the pull down box.
NOTE: It may be listed as Novell 2000 Adapter or by some other name.
- Once you have selected your NIC Card, look at the IP Address line and check that it starts with 192.168. If it does not, you do not yet have a SXU Connection. If you have filled out the application and have waited more than 24 hours please do the following:
- Restart your computer, repeat the last step
- If you still do not have an IP Address starting with 192.168. please call the helpdesk at ext. 3291
