Interlibrary Loan

What is Interlibrary Loan?

  • Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service provided by the Saint Xavier Library to obtain books or journal articles from other libraries.

Who can use Interlibrary Loan?

  • The Library will search for requests submitted only by current SXU  faculty, staff and students.
  • The Library cannot process ILL requests from SXU alumni because of consortial agreements. Alumni can request an item through their local public library.
  • You must use your official SXU email address when requesting an ILL.  As required by University policy, the Library will not process or respond to any request that does not use the SXU email address.

Policies

  • Normally, there is no charge for ILL service. However, some libraries do charge for loaning materials, so you must state how much you are willing to pay.
  • It often takes at least a week to obtain the items, so don't wait until the last minute.
  • There is no limit on the number of requests you make, but to control costs please request only items that you need.
  • Most libraries will not lend videos, CD's or other multimedia materials.
  • The Library will e-mail you as soon as possible if the item is not available.

Pickup and Returns

  • Students will be notified by e-mail when the items are available for pickup at the Library's Circulation Desk. For faculty, the materials will be delivered to your department office.
  • You are responsible for returning the items to the Library by the date stated on the item. You will be billed for any fines imposed by the lending library.

Books

  • The online catalog lists the holdings of over 70 academic libraries in the state and includes resources in various formats.
  • If the item is listed as "Available" at Saint Xavier University, patrons should go to the Library to check it out.
  • If the book is only available from another university patrons should place an electronic request themselves using the "Request an Item" function in the catalog record.
  • Books that are not available in the Illinet Online catalog can be requested

Articles

ERIC Documents

  • Many items in the ERIC database are available full-text. ERIC Documents (e.g. ED123456) are different than ERIC Journals (e.g. EJ123456). ERIC Journals should be searched and requested as other journal articles.
