QuickSearch FAQs

What is QuickSearch? / What does QuickSearch do?

QuickSearch allows you to search multiple databases at the same time. For technical reasons, QuickSearch can search only common features of the databases, including keyword, title and author.

Does using QuickSearch replace searching individual databases?

It depends.  Normally, use QuickSearch for relatively simple searches. For more advanced searching, use the individual databases.

Who may use QuickSearch?

Members of the Saint Xavier University community may use QuickSearch, whether on or off campus.  When accessing QuickSearch from off-campus you will need to enter the 14-digit number on the bottom of your SXU Cougar Card.

Are all the Library's databases searchable through QuickSearch?

No. For technical reasons some databases cannot be searched through QuickSearch. Major databases not included are:

  • Annual Reviews
  • Chaucer Bibliography Online
  • Lexis-Nexis
  • Mergeant Online
  • Music Index
  • SRDS Media Solutions
  • Standard & Poors NetAdvantage
  • ValueLine Investment Survey

You can still search these databases the Library's Articles and Databases page.

How do I find scholarly, peer-reviewed journals using QuickSearch?

QuickSearch does not allow you to search only for scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. You can only limit your search to full-text articles. To find only scholarly, peer-reviewed journals you need to use the individual databases.

Why do I get different results in QuickSearch and a databases's normal interface?

QuickSearch uses different methods to search each databases interface and then displays a list of results. Sometimes it cannot perform exactly the same as the database would. For more precise searching, you should use the database interface.
