Faculty Resources

Collection Development

The Library allots $300 to each full-time faculty member for ordering Library materials. The Library will acquire the materials if they meet the purchasing guidelines and the budget permits.  Faculty must order using the Purchase Request Form.  To ensure the best use of University funds, the Library has the following guidelines that faculty must follow:

  • Items must be requested by December 1, 2007.  After December 1, the Library Director will assign remaining funds to the librarians.
  • Highly specialized monographs that will not assist students will not be purchased.
  • Items purchased must relate to a course taught at the University.
  • The Library Director will review requests costing more than $100.00 for a single volume or item.
  • Only one copy of an item will be purchased.
  • Material in languages other than English normally will not be purchased, unless it directly supports language courses taught at the University.
  • Textbooks usually are not purchased for the collection.
  • Paperback formats are preferred over hardbacks.
  • DVDs are preferred over VHS tapes.
  • The department or school Library liaison will coordinate requests from faculty that exceed their allotment, all requests from part-time faculty, and uses unexpended funds. Full-time faculty do not have to submit anything to the liaison as long as the ordering requests fits within the guidelines.

Requests for database or print journal subscriptions must be sent to the Library Director.

Classroom Instruction

The Library staff can provide in-class instruction for SXU faculty, tailored to the needs of the course and its students.  You can request instruction through the online in-class instruction request form. The most effective instruction happens when the session is tied to a specific assignment and is offered at the time when students are preparing that assignment. Please give the librarians two-weeks notice to allow adequate time for scheduling the appropriate classroom and for preparing the session.

Reserves

Maureen L'Amas can put library materials on reserve for your class, so the materials will be available to all the students. Please contact Maureen two weeks before the course begins, so materials will be ready when your students request them.

Borrowing

See the Library's page on borrowing and circulation policies.

Persistent Linking

"Persistent Links" are URLs that connect users directly to a library database or article by clicking a link embedded in a Web page. Persistent links can be useful when creating syllabi, using Blackboard or creating online reading lists or bibliographies.

The persistent links are designed so that faculty and students can access the articles whether or not they are on the campus network. The proxy server which regulates access from off campus will require each faculty member or student to log in with the 14-digit barcode number found on the bottom of their Cougar Card.

See the Library's page on persistent linking for more information, including instructions for each databases.

Document Delivery

Faculty can call x3352 and request a book or journal owned by the Library. The Library staff will check the materials out on your account and deliver them to your department or school office. Materials will normally be delivered or picked up on a daily basis, Monday through Friday. In addition, faculty can call x3352 and request that the Library pick up materials. The Library staff will include a receipt for all materials sent through document delivery.

Books from other libraries should be ordered through the Illinet Online catalog or through inter-library loan.  When materials arrive they will be routed to your department or school office unless you request otherwise.

Document delivery does not include photocopying of materials for faculty.
