Sylvia M. Schlunk Award

The Sylvia M. Schlunk Award was established by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in 1991 in memory of Sylvia, a valued colleague, excellent teacher and friend.

This $1000 award is given annually and can be applied toward tuition, fees, room, board or living expenses. It may also be used toward tuition for a summer course.

Requirements:

  • At least junior status.
  • Enrolled for a minimum of 12 semester hours for the following fall.
  • Be a declared major in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Computer Science or Computer Studies.
  • Have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours in Mathematics, Mathematics Education or Computer Science.
  • Have completed or have in progress 12 semester hours in Mathematics, Mathematics Education or Computer Science at Saint Xavier University.
  • Seniors who are completing their second semester in the fall and carry at least 6 hours may also apply.

The application includes a question which requires a three (3) page response written by the applicant.

The Edwin G. Keene Scholarship in Mathematics

Established in 1999 by Dr. Carol A. Keene '61 in honor of her father Edwin G. Keene, this scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in the Saint Xavier University Department of Mathematics.

Criteria have been determined by the donor and the department chair as follows:

  • Awarded to a student with a declared major in Mathematics, or Mathematics Education.
  • Consistent attendance at all mathematics or mathematics education classes.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0 per semester in all mathematics or mathematics education classes. Minimum GPA 3.0 per semester in all other University classes.
  • Must maintain and complete a full-time academic load - minimum of 12 credit hours per semester in addition to the GPA's listed above.

The Keene Scholarship will be awarded to an entering freshman. It will be granted based upon a review by a committee of Mathematics faculty members, a letter of application stating the student's interests in and goals for mathematics and recommendations by two high school teachers. The recipient shall have an ACT score of 27 or comparable SAT score, 4 years of high school math with a GPA in math classes consistent with their ACT score (GPA of 3.5 in a 4.0 system) and an overall high school GPA of 3.0 in a 4.0 system.

The recipient will be eligible to renew the scholarship during his/her college career by maintaining a GPA of 3.0 in a 4.0 system both in mathematics or mathematics education and other University classes. If the recipient changes his/her major from mathematics or mathematics education he/she shall forfeit the scholarship.
