Mathematics Major

Students majoring in mathematics have the choice of a Bachelor of Arts degree or a Bachelor of Science degree.

Students who major in mathematics are prepared for entry into graduate schools and for entry into business and industrial positions which require a bachelor's degree in mathematics; they also fulfill the subject area requirements for teaching mathematics in the secondary school. Courses in computer science, natural science, physics and business may be elected to complement the major in mathematics.

Requirements for B.A. and B.S. Degrees

  • MATH 200 Intro to Discrete Mathematics
  • MATH 201 Calculus with Analytic Geometry I
  • MATH 202 Calculus with Analytic Geometry II
  • MATH 203 Calculus with Analytic Geometry III
  • MATH 211 Linear Algebra
  • MATH 301 Advanced Calculus
  • MATH 305 Probability and Statistics I
  • MATH 306 Probability and Statistics II
  • MATH 399 Senior Seminar, 0-1 s.h.

BS - 15 courses plus Senior Seminar (52-54 s.h.)

Special Notes

  • Students pursuing the BA degree are required to satisfy the foreign language/culture core requirement.
  • Students preparing to teach mathematics at the secondary school level are strongly encouraged to take MATH 307 and MATH 308.
  • Students planning to attend graduate school are strongly encouraged to complete the requirements for a BS degree.
  • All prerequisites are stated in the University Catalog. A grade of C or better is required in all courses counting toward a major.

Mathematics Education Major

Students who major in Mathematics Education satisfy all requirements for teaching mathematics at the elementary and junior high school levels. These requirements include mathematics, education and mathematics-education courses. While this major provides a broad mathematics base, it is focused on the preparation of prospective teachers in grades K-9 with an emphasis in the middle grades and/or junior high school.

Students are prepared for teaching mathematics at the elementary and middle school levels as well as taking on leadership roles in schools and school districts in the teaching of mathematics.

Students are also prepared for graduate study in mathematics, mathematics education and education.
