No injuries, closing will not affect start of Fall semester
Chicago (Aug. 18, 2009) Saint Xavier University’s Warde Academic Center is temporarily closed after a basement electrical fire early Tuesday morning at the Chicago campus building, located at 3700 W. 103rd St.
No one was injured and the University remains open. The closing will not affect Fall semester classes, which begin Monday, Aug. 24.
The fire occurred in the transformer room in Warde's basement following a power outage that occurred at approximately 4 a.m. on Tuesday.
Warde is officially closed for remainder of Tuesday and damage is still being assessed. Power has been restored to other affected campus buildings.
The Chicago Fire Department, a hazardous materials unit and ComEd were at the University to address the situation. Fire department officials gave the all-clear at approximately 10:20 a.m.
“I’d like to commend the cooperation, good spirit and generosity of the Saint Xavier community,” said University President Judith A. Dwyer, Ph.D. “Safety is our first priority, and the situation was well-managed and everyone stayed exceptionally level-headed."
