Saint Xavier University Hosts Patrick A. Miceli Exhibit
Artist gives new perspective to fast food toys and packaging
Chicago (Jan. 24, 2006) – Artist Patrick A. Miceli takes a fresh look at fast-food restaurant toys and packaging in an art exhibit that opens Monday, Feb. 13, in the art gallery at Saint Xavier University’s Chicago campus at 3700 W. 103rd St.
The exhibit, titled “Toying with Heart,” includes an opening lecture and reception at which Miceli will discuss the connection between consumerism, mass marketing and pop culture on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 3:30 p.m. Both the exhibit and the opening lecture and reception are free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through March 6.
The exhibit features toys and packaging from fast-food restaurants displayed in a unique way to give viewers a fresh perspective. By creating a different view of the toys and packaging and the societal influences that go along with them, Miceli’s work gives viewers a greater understanding and appreciation of such everyday objects.
“These identifiable elements connect to our experience of the object, generating or prompting a response concerning the significance of the objects beyond their intended purpose,” Miceli said. “Toys are not only toys, they are tools of acculturation. We identify with the objects because of their familiarity.”
Miceli believes that society has a strong influence on people’s familiarity with such objects, and that those impressions in turn shape individual, sexual and cultural identities in people.
The art gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, contact the Saint Xavier University Art Department at (773) 298-3081.
