Film "Orlando" to be shown April 19

Saint Xavier University's film series concludes

Chicago (March 10, 2006) – Sally Potter’s film “Orlando” will be shown on Wednesday, April 19, at 7 p.m. in Saint Xavier University’s McGuire Hall, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago. It is free and open to the public.

In the last film of Saint Xavier University’s 2005-2006 film series, “Orlando” tells the story of a nobleman whom Queen Elizabeth I commands to stay young forever. Miraculously, he does just that. Orlando also becomes immortal, but has the tendency to slip into death-like sleep for long periods of time. Halfway through the 18th century, he changes into a woman during his sleep. The film follows him through several centuries of British history, experiencing a variety of lives and relationships along the way.

Based on the novel by Virginia Wolf, Potter beautifully translates the author’s wit to the screen. “Orlando” mixes history with drama, such as a great freeze during the 17th century that encases England in ice, which results in fairy-tale enchantment and witty metaphor. Potter’s signature vignette style takes Orlando on several journeys, as patron to a mooching poet, an ambassador to the Middle East, and a lover of an American explorer. Through his journeys, he learns about all varieties of life, society and gender in all of their complexities. A discussion featuring Saint Xavier faculty and community experts will follow the film.

The series is sponsored by the School of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Art and Design, and the Illinois Arts Council. For more information, please contact Alison Fraunhar at fraunhar@sxu.edu or (773) 298-3083.
