Saint Xavier University opens Child Development Lab School to the public

April 4 open house slated for SXU community, public

Chicago (March 14, 2006) – Saint Xavier University’s Child Development Laboratory School will hold its first annual Spring Open House on Tuesday, April 4, at its location at United Methodist Church, 110th and St. Louis, Chicago.

The SXU community and the public are invited to attend the open house to learn more about the quality childcare program and summer and fall registration details. Saint Xavier provides a quality childcare program for children three to five years old through the lab school and teacher certification programs through the School of Education.

The Child Development Laboratory School was opened in August 2005 to provide a nurturing, safe environment that is child-directed, inquiry-based and play-centered. The school integrates teaching, learning and service benefiting children, their families and future teachers. Previously, the program only served Saint Xavier University students, faculty and staff; this is the first time the program is opening to the public.

“The first open house will allow the community to see the renovated space in the United Methodist Church and meet the teachers, tour the facility and ask questions,” said Jennifer Briody, Ph.D., assistant professor of Education at Saint Xavier University and faculty director of the lab school.

Saint Xavier students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the open house from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., 3 to 5 p.m., or 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend the 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. open house with their children and participate in “a day in the life of a lab student.”

The open house is being held in conjunction with the National Association for Young Children’s “Week of the Young Child,” whose theme this year is “Building Better Futures for Our Children.”

“The week of the Young Child is an annual celebration of children and all those individuals who teach young children and provide a nurturing and creative environment for learning,” Briody said.
