Saint Xavier University receives $1 million gift from Sisters of Mercy
Money earmarked for Office of University Mission and Heritage
Chicago (June 5, 2006) – The Sisters of Mercy, Regional Community of Chicago, has donated $1 million to Saint Xavier University toward the establishment of a $2.5 million endowment for its Office for University Mission and Heritage.
In addition, the Sisters of Mercy has pledged to donate another $500,000 if the University raises an additional $1 million for this purpose by June 30, 2008, so the University can reach its goal of $2.5 million for the endowment.
The gift and the endowment it will help establish will be used to provide reliable future funding for efforts to deepen Saint Xavier’s Catholic identity and Mercy heritage.
“This remarkable gift will ensure the continuation and enhancement of the programs and services of the Office for University Mission and Heritage,” said Judith A. Dwyer, Ph.D., president of Saint Xavier University. “It will provide a lasting legacy to support those values and purposes that we hold close to our hearts as an institution. This gift will also ensure that our history and hopes find contemporary expression in the future.”
Sister Joy Clough, RSM, president of the Sisters of Mercy, Regional Community of Chicago, said the Sisters of Mercy were able to make the donation thanks to pooled earnings and some generous bequests received this year.
“We’re delighted to make this gift to the University,” Clough said. “As the University’s founders and continuing sponsors, the Sisters of Mercy are pleased with the renewed emphasis and persistent attention Saint Xavier is giving to its Catholic identity and Mercy heritage. We want to help assure that such emphasis and attention will continue into the future.”
