Freshman applications at an all-time high

Record set for eighth straight year

Chicago (June 23, 2006) – Saint Xavier University has set a record for freshman applications received for the eighth consecutive year. Applications have tripled since 1998.

As of June 16, Saint Xavier has received 2,164 applications for the freshman class, surpassing last year’s record for total applications by 12 percent. The Office of Admission is projecting it will receive more than 2,220 freshman applications for the fall 2006 semester.

“Freshman applications have grown more than 10 percent annually for eight consecutive years. As a result, freshman enrollment has nearly doubled,” said Kathleen Carlson, vice president for research, planning and assessment.

Last fall, Saint Xavier University enrolled 420 students -- its largest freshman class in history. A total of 2,005 students applied for the fall 2005 semester.

“The quality of the Saint Xavier University educational experience is the real driving force behind these growing numbers of students,” said Robert Tenczar, vice president for University Relations at Saint Xavier University. “Students succeed at Saint Xavier, and that word of mouth generates more interest every year.”

Beth Gierach, assistant provost of Admission at Saint Xavier University, said the addition of a call center to contact prospective students and share with them the opportunities at the University, coupled with a determined effort to maintain monthly contact with applicants by e-mail and phone, have contributed to the record-setting increases.

A greatly improved viewbook and the University’s Web site have also helped increase enrollment. “The Web site is attractive, interesting and facilitates inquiry and application for admission in a user-friendly, high-tech manner,” Gierach said.
