Women invited to participate in Heart Smart for Women Program

Saint Xavier offers free 12-week program

Chicago (August 16, 2006) – Saint Xavier University invites area women to participate in a free Heart Smart for Women Program that begins Sept. 18 at Saint Xavier’s Orland Park campus and on Sept. 19 at Saint Xavier’s Chicago campus.

“Heart disease is a growing concern for all Americans. The Illinois Department of Public Health identified heart disease education for women as a priority and is funding our efforts to assist area women,” said nursing professor Monica Ryan, project director and director of Saint Xavier University’s Health Center. “This program provides women with the information, tools and resources necessary to understand heart disease risk and take steps to improve their health.”

A $30,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Office of Women’s Health allows Saint Xavier to offer this program at no charge to participants.

The Heart Smart for Women program welcomes women from the community, as well as those who are part of the University. The 12-week session is designed to combine the skills and talents of Saint Xavier’s nurse practitioners and exercise experts with dietitians and stress management consultants. Group sizes are small, with a maximum of 20 women per class, and are led by nurses.

After enrolling, each participant meets with a nurse practitioner to measure blood pressure, weight, height, fasting lipids and body mass index. Measurements will be repeated three months after the session ends to determine future heart smart actions.

“Saint Xavier University initially began in 1846 as an institution for educating women and is proud to return to that original focus by offering this program to women in the community,” said Anne R. Bavier, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., dean and professor of Saint Xavier University’s School of Nursing.

The first session meets from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Mondays starting Sept. 18 at the Orland Park campus, 18230 Orland Parkway. Signs will be posted at the main entrance. The second session meets from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays starting Sept. 19 at the Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St. Both sessions conclude the week of Dec. 4. Registration begins Monday, Aug. 21.
