"Apprentice" Bill Rancic speaks at Saint Xavier University

Addresses ethics and entrepreneurships

Chicago (Aug. 30, 2006) – Orland Park native Bill Rancic, the first “apprentice,” will kick off Saint Xavier University’s 160th anniversary celebration with a lecture on ethics and entrepreneurship at 7 p.m. Sept. 20 in Saint Xavier’s Shannon Center, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.

The lecture is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

The lecture is also part of the University’s Homecoming Week activities and the 175th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Sisters of Mercy, who opened Saint Xavier Academy for Females in Chicago in 1846.

A graduate of Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park, Rancic achieved national fame as Donald Trump’s first “apprentice,” which won him the job of overseeing construction of Trump Tower in Chicago for a year. Rancic still makes appearances on the popular NBC prime-time TV show and fills in for Trump as judge on the TV show.

In his first appearance at Saint Xavier University, Rancic will address the ethical challenges he confronts as an entrepreneur – both as an apprentice and in his own business. He will also talk about how he handles his new fame and how his family, faith and education ground his approach to life and work.

“We all struggle with personal and professional challenges to truth-telling and integrity on a regular basis. I look forward to hearing Bill’s take on how he recognizes and negotiates these ethical dilemmas, especially in the realm of high-stakes business deals,” said Sister Susan Sanders, R.S.M., vice president for University Mission and Heritage and director of the Center for Religion and Public Discourse, the event sponsor. Rancic’s lecture is also sponsored in part by Great Lakes Bank.

Rancic’s mother, Gail, who has taken courses in Saint Xavier’s School of Education graduate program, will introduce her son to the audience.

Following the lecture, Rancic will sign copies of his books, You’re Hired and Beyond the Lemonade Stand, which will be available for purchase.

Rancic is an award-winning television personality, financial correspondent and best-selling author who regularly lends advice to everyone from Donald Trump to the local professional with a dream and an idea.

Eight years ago, Rancic founded the company cigarsaroundtheworld.com in a 400-square-foot studio apartment and turned it into a thriving multimillion dollar national operation. The son of educators, he is a true entrepreneur who originally paid his way through college by starting a boat wash and wax business in the Chicago area.

Rancic has been on NBC’s Today show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, CNN and quoted in major publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly. He has given presentations to companies such as Microsoft, Coca-Cola, Leo Burnett and MasterCard.

The lecture is one of many events celebrating Saint Xavier University’s 160th anniversary. In 1846, the Sisters of Mercy opened the first academy in Chicago to provide a Catholic education for girls and young women. Today, Saint Xavier is a private, coeducational institution serving approximately 5,800 students with high quality academic programs. It offers 36 undergraduate majors and 32 graduate program options in five schools. With campuses in Chicago and Orland Park, the University offers personalized education that emphasizes challenging undergraduate, graduate and professional programs of study.
