Marimba concert scheduled for Sept. 29

Saint Xavier professor to perform

Chicago (Sept. 14, 2006) – Erik Janners, Saint Xavier University’s director of bands and professor of percussion, will perform a marimba music recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, in McGuire Hall, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.

“I am excited to bring a wide variety of beautiful music for the marimba to the students and community of Saint Xavier University,” Janners said. “I hope to highlight the range, possibilities, beauty and versatility of this challenging mallet percussion instrument.”

The feature piece of the evening will be Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole, a violin concerto that Janners adapted for the marimba. Also to be performed are the Concertino for Marimba by Alfred Reed and Marimba Spiritual by Minoru Miki. Janners will be accompanied by Daniel Surma, an adjunct professor of piano at Saint Xavier, and assisted by Joshua Manchester, adjunct instructor of percussion, and Justin Antos, a senior at Saint Xavier.

Janners earned his doctor in musical arts in wind conducting from the University of Alabama. He conducts the percussion ensemble and concert, jazz and marching bands at Saint Xavier and is active as an adjudicator and clinician in Chicago and internationally.

The concert is open to the public. Admission is $6 for adults and $5 for seniors and visiting students. Admission is free for all SXU students, faculty and staff with a valid University ID. For more information, please contact the Saint Xavier University music department at (773) 298-3421.
