Evergreen Park resident receives full tuition for one year

Saint Xavier senior receives scholarship

Chicago (Sept. 22, 2006) – Evergreen Park resident William Runowski has been awarded the William G. McGowan Scholarship, which provides full tuition for the 2006-07 academic year at Saint Xavier University.

Runowski, a senior accounting major, submitted a 1,000-word essay last spring addressing the contributions of William G. McGowan to both the business world and the telecommunications field. In 1968, McGowan organized MCI Communications Corp., which effectively ended the telecommunications monopoly in the United States.

“We feel very privileged to award the McGowan scholarship to a Graham School student,” said Laura Earner, associate dean of the Graham School of Management at Saint Xavier. “The generosity of this gift has allowed Bill to concentrate on his studies and pursue his dream career in forensic accounting. I feel he will become a true business leader in this area.”

Established in 1992 in Washington, D.C., the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund furthers McGowan’s vision. The fund provides grants for healthcare and medical scientific research, as well as educational opportunities that develop the gifts and talents of youth.

“McGowan’s devotion to his career and his dream has been a living example for all the entrepreneurs who were told it could not be done and to give up,” Runowski wrote in his essay. “Thanks to men like William G. McGowan, many men have been inspired to take their dreams to the next step and make them happen.”
