SXU chosen to help address shortage of nursing faculty

State provides scholarships for graduate nursing students

Chicago (Nov. 2, 2006) – To address the shortage of nursing faculty, Saint Xavier University has been selected to accept nursing students who receive state scholarships under the Nurse Educator Scholarship Program.

Under the program, the Illinois Student Assistance Commission provides state scholarships for nursing students to pursue graduate-level nursing programs at eligible Illinois colleges and universities. Saint Xavier University’s School of Nursing is one of 14 programs in Illinois chosen to participate in the program.

The program encourages more students to become nursing educators in Illinois and provides an opportunity for working nurses to return to school to become nursing instructors.

“Illinois is experiencing a serious shortage of both practicing nurses and nurse educators,” said Kay Thurn, associate dean of the School of Nursing at Saint Xavier. “To ensure that quality nurses will be educated to practice and care for the citizens of Illinois, excellent nurse educators must be available. Saint Xavier’s School of Nursing has an education component in the master’s program to provide such expert teachers.”

The state scholarship program pays for tuition and fees for approved graduate-level programs at eligible Illinois colleges and universities for up to four calendar years.

Applicants must commit to teach in Illinois for five years in an approved program of professional nursing education or a program of practical nursing education. The scholarship will convert to a loan, payable in full plus 5 percent interest, if the student breaks the agreement.

The application deadline is March 1, 2007. For more information about the scholarship, please visit http://www.collegezone.com/giftassist/753_8812.htm.
