Saint Xavier University scores above peers in national survey

National Survey of Student Engagement assessment results released

Chicago (Nov. 13, 2006) – Saint Xavier University has scored above its peers in multiple areas of the National Survey of Student Engagement study released today. Saint Xavier beat national benchmarks in the areas of academic challenge, student-faculty interaction among first-year students, and supportive campus environment.

The 2006 NSSE report is based on information from about 260,000 randomly selected first-year and senior students at 523 four-year American colleges and universities. The study, titled “Engaged Learning: Fostering Success of all Students,” measures how well students are learning and what they put into and get out of their undergraduate experience. Saint Xavier was in the first group of institutions to participate in the study when it began seven years ago.
“This is an exceptional validation of the challenging and supportive learning experience we provide our students,” said Saint Xavier University President Judith A. Dwyer, Ph.D. “The NSSE study is rapidly becoming a premier indicator of quality and effectiveness.”

Saint Xavier University is a leader in the national trend of adopting cutting-edge assessment techniques to develop best practices in serving its students. It was in the first group of institutions to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement, the Lumina Longitudinal Study, and the Collegiate Learning Assessment. Saint Xavier is also joining 34 other colleges and universities to examine first-year student success as it is shaped by students’ experiences in a study funded by the Spencer Foundation.
